What the Church of Christ Believes

We speak where the Bible speaks and are silent where the Bible is silent.

The Bible guides us

This page explains what the Church of Christ believes. We believe the Bible is God’s word. Where it speaks, we speak. Where it is silent, we stay silent. We do not add our own rules to it, and we do not take anything away.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
2 Timothy 3:16–17

We follow the New Testament

We follow the teaching of Christ and the apostles. For us, what the Church of Christ believes means looking like the church we read about in the New Testament and doing what that church did.

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Acts 2:42

We preach Christ crucified

Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and rose again on the third day. We tell people about him so that souls can be won for his kingdom. This is the message we preach.

“For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
1 Corinthians 2:2

Jesus teaches a crowd on a hillside above the Sea of Galilee, the sermon behind what the Church of Christ believes

From the life of Jesus Christ

The sermon on the hillside

Large crowds followed Jesus, so he climbed a hillside, sat down and taught. He began with the Beatitudes, such as “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” He told his listeners to love their enemies, to pray to their Father in heaven, and not to worry about food or clothes, because God feeds the birds and cares for his people.

He ended with a short story about two builders. The wise man built his house on rock. When rain and floods came, it stood. The foolish man built on sand, and his house fell. Jesus said that anyone who hears his words and does them is like the wise builder. The crowds were amazed, because he taught with real authority.

Where to read it: Matthew 5:1–7:29. Luke 6:17–49 records a similar sermon.
